The newspaper "Khalg" published the article "Toponyms - the "key" of history" by  PhD in geography Natig Babayev, a senior researcher at the Institute of Geography named after academician H. Aliyev.

In the article, the author talks about the study of toponymy of each natural-geographical region, which has exceptional scientific, experimental, historical and political significance and emphasizes the importance of an unbiased, complete and systematic study of historical facts from a scientific point of view.

He considers it necessary to conduct a broader study of a large number of microtoponyms in Azerbaijan, especially in the territories liberated from occupation, and conduct field research for this, as well as regularly hold conferences dedicated to the study of Azerbaijani toponymy. A more systematic solution to issues in this area can have a positive impact on the quality of the work being carried out and give good results. Currently, researchers from the Department of “History of Geographical Thought and Toponymy” are conducting in-depth and comprehensive studies of the toponyms of Western Azerbaijan, which clearly confirm that these lands belong to our people.

According to the scientist, it would be advisable to restore the name of the department “Geographical names (toponymy)”, which operated at the Institute of Geography in 1973.
