PhD Shamil Azizov, head of the department of geoinformatics and cartography of the Institute of Geography named after academician H. Aliyev of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Doctor of Philosophy in Geography, Shamil Azizov turned 70 years old.
Sh.K. Azizov was born in 1954 in Baku. In 1972-1976 he studied geography at the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University. Since 1976, he worked in the “Cartography” department of the Azerbaijan Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences
In 1979-1983 he studied in correspondence graduate school at the Institute of Geography.
In 1986, he defended his PhD thesis on the topic “Studying the structure of the landscape using the cartographic method.” Since 1989, he has worked as a researcher at the institute, since 1992 as a senior researcher, leading researcher until 2016. At the same time, he headed the department since 2011. Since 2017, he has headed the Department of Geoinformatics and Cartography at the Institute of Geography.
Scientific works of scientist Sh.K. Azizov are devoted to the study of thematic and atlas mapping, landscape science and toponymy. Three of his author's maps were published in the National Atlas of Azerbaijan (2014).
He is a specialist in the study of detail and completeness of landscape maps of Azerbaijan, quantitative characteristics of the shape of landscape contours, and analysis of landscape maps with cartometric method.
In 1979, he took an active part in compiling large-scale atlases “Atlas of the Azerbaijan SSR”, “Natural conditions and natural resources of the Azerbaijan SSR”, editing thematic and educational maps and globes prepared for printing. In connection with the 70th anniversary of the Institute of Geography, he prepared the section “Stages of development and achievements of cartography” in the book “Institute of Geography - 70”, and also published an extensive article entitled “Review of the development of our cartography”.
Sh. Azizov is the author of more than 70 scientific articles and several thematic maps in the field of geographic cartography. His scientific research is reflected in a 2020 monograph, and the most important scientific results are reflected in three collective monographs published in 2018, 2019 and 2022.
