Senior researcher of the Department of the History of Geographical Thought and Toponymy of the Institute of Geography named after аcad. H. Aliyev of the MSE AR, PhD in geography Natig Babayev and senior researcher of the Department of Political and Economic Geography of Azerbaijan, PhD in geography Nijat Imamverdiyev were on an expedition to the Shamakhi and Ismailli regions for 10 days, from August 13 to 22.
The purpose of the expedition was to determine the distribution area of existing geographical names in the specified regions, the nominative classification of their use in various sources, their identification and disclosure, an assessment of the potential for appropriation based on the characteristics of the methods of their formation, and the identification of new geographical names.
According to N. Babayev, the study of toponyms belonging to our people in these places of residence of ancient people has great historical, political, scientific and practical significance. During the expedition it was established that among the ethnotoponymic geographical names existing in the East Zangezur economic region, there are a number of parallels in the territory of the Shemakha region.
