The 95th anniversary of the prominent figure of Azerbaijani geography science, Mahmud Khalilov, was celebrated at the Institute of Geography May 01, 2026 | 12:05 / IMPORTANT EVENTS

The event was held at the Institute of Geography of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the distinguished scientist, Doctor of Geographical Sciences Mahmud Khalilov.

Opening the event with an introductory speech, the acting director of the Institute, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor Zaur Imrani emphasized Mahmud Khalilov’s exceptional contributions to the development of Azerbaijani geography. He noted that the scientist’s long-term scientific activity and the specialists he trained continue to contribute to the country’s scientific potential.

At the anniversary ceremony, Head of the “Land Reclamation” Laboratory, Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Sciences Ismayil Guliyev spoke about Mahmud Khalilov’s rich scientific legacy, high human qualities, and life path, which serves as an example for young researchers. He especially highlighted that the scientist formed a significant scientific and moral school.

Other scientists who spoke at the event also shared their memories, stating that Mahmud Khalilov was a person with deep knowledge, a principled stance, and exceptional dedication to science.

Later, Mahmud Khalilov expressed his gratitude to the organizers and colleagues for their attention and respect, and wished success to young researchers working for the development of science.

Within the framework of the event, a presentation consisting of photographs reflecting different stages of the scientist’s life and scientific activity was shown. The presentation was received with great interest by the participants.

Mahmud Khalilov was born on April 19, 1931, in the city of Nukha (now Sheki). In 1954–1958, he participated in forest management work and gained extensive experience. Since 1959, he worked in various scientific institutions, conducting important research in the field of soil erosion and forest ecosystems. In 1964, he defended his кандидат’s (PhD-equivalent) dissertation, and in 1990 he defended his doctoral dissertation. The scientist, author of more than 185 scientific works, made valuable contributions to Azerbaijani science. His research in soil erosion, forest ecosystems, and their protection is marked by significant scientific results.

The anniversary event was remembered as a manifestation of great respect for the rich and meaningful life path of the scientist and his contributions to Azerbaijani science.
