An educational event was organized at the Institute of Geography of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan within the framework of the “Human Rights Month,” observed from May 18 to June 18 in connection with Human Rights Day.
Opening the event, the Institute’s Scientific Secretary, PhD in Geography Saida Zeynalova, noted that on June 18, 1998, the National Leader of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, approved the State Program on the Protection of Human Rights, thereby identifying the protection of human rights as one of the priority directions of state policy. She emphasized that this strategic course is being successfully continued today under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev.
Following the opening remarks, doctoral student of the Institute of Geography Ayshan Mammadova delivered a presentation entitled “Human Rights: Justice, Equality and Decent Work for Everyone.” In her report, she reviewed the historical development of human rights and highlighted the significance of key legal documents, including the Magna Carta of 1215, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 1948, and the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted in 1995.
The presentation also underscored important milestones in the protection of human rights in Azerbaijan, including the establishment of the Ombudsman institution in 2001 and the declaration of June 18 as the country’s National Human Rights Day by a decree of President Ilham Aliyev. A. Mammadova further provided a structured analysis of the civil, political, social, and economic dimensions of human rights, emphasizing the importance of decent working conditions in ensuring the effective protection of these rights.
At the end of the event, Kamran Ramazanli, Chairman of the Institute’s Trade Union Organization, delivered a speech on the objectives and social significance of educational initiatives organized within the framework of the Human Rights Month. He also highlighted their role in enhancing the legal awareness and knowledge of the Institute’s employees.
