The next meeting of experts of the Public Association “Experts in the field of water use” chaired by Academician Ramiz Mammadov was held in the Institute of Geography named after acad. H.Aliyev of ANAS.
D.Sc. in geography Vagif Mamadov spoke about the project “Assessment of the current environmental status of the Absheron lakes”.
He noted that the morphometric parameters, physical, biological characteristics of the lakes on the Absheron Peninsila have not yet been studied, especially the current environmental situation and the nature of their change over time. The “Cadastre of lakes of the Azerbaijan Republic” has not been compiled. The lakes are the basis of the modern hydrographic network of Absheron, with the exception of the Jeyranbatan reservoir and canals.
The speaker noted these lakes have been used by the population for a number of years for economic purposes. Absheron lakes, according to him, are polluted with household garbage, industrial waste and the remains of underground minerals.
Academician Ramiz Mammadov reported on a three-stage study of the lakes of the Absheron Peninsula and noted the importance of a special study of the lakes, taking into account their role in the environment and the life of the population, as well as the impact of human activities on the ecological status of the lakes.
He considers it necessary to carry out mapping using satellite imagery, drones and other modern technologies, to divide into squares the territory of Absheron, rich in 250 lakes, and to classify them separately by volume, origin, and ecological status.
This could help entrepreneurs who wish to engage in construction, farming or other useful business in these areas.
After discussions and suggestions on this issue, they decided to collect all the information about Absheron lakes and write a book with the participation of experts.
