The leading researcher of the Department of History of Geographical Thought and Toponymy of the Institute of Geography named after Academician H. Aliyev of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Honored Worker of Culture, member of the Commission on Toponymy under the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan of the Republic of Azerbaijan, P.h.D. in Geography Mahira Abbasova is 75 years old.

On this occasion, a meeting was held chaired by the General Director of the Institute, Doctor of Geographical Sciences Zakir Eminov. Providing information about the life and scientific activities of M. Abbasova, he noted that she spent 54 years of her life at the Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. He said that Mahira khanum is one of the most productive and famous female toponymic specialists among Azerbaijani geographers. Collection, protection and enrichment of the toponymic fund of Azerbaijan, as well as mapping, compiling toponymic dictionaries, teaching the science of toponymy, training young personnel in this field, applying toponymic results in many areas, etc. is an indicator of the painstaking work of Mahira Abbasova.

M.Abbasova, one of the co-authors of the first monograph "Toponymy of the southeastern part of the Greater Caucasus", the encyclopedic dictionary "Azerbaijani toponyms", a member of the scientific and editorial board of the book "Administrative-territorial structure of the Azerbaijan Republic" (2013) is the author of more than 20 reports and more than 50 different scientific articles. Since 1992, he was elected a member of the toponymic commission under the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 2015, she was awarded the honorary title of "Honored Worker of Culture" of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
