Acting Deputy Director of the Institute of Geography of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Associate Professor Zaur Imrani, took part in the seminar "Interagency coordination and emergency planning for the creation of early warning systems."

The event was attended by employees of the Ministries of Emergency Situations, Internal Affairs, Health, Ecology and Natural Resources, Science and Education, the Medical Territory Management Union, the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society, the Swedish Civil Defense Agency, the Italian International Environmental Monitoring Center and the Red Cross.

The main goal of the workshop was to ensure the full implementation of early warning approaches and interagency cooperation for national and local emergency planning and flexible response measures in civil protection activities, as well as the exchange of experience on effective early warning systems. Participants listened to presentations on early warning systems such as Creating Effective and Efficient Early Warning Systems, Developing a National Risk Management Program, Forest Fire Prediction Models, RISICO and EFFIS, and answered training questions.

  1. Imrani informed the seminar participants about the work of the Institute of Geography related to natural disasters (floods, landslides, high waters, avalanches, etc.). He said that the assessment of the consequences associated with forest fires differs depending on the natural and anthropogenic impact. Direct losses are estimated by determining the location and area of the event, but the assessment of damage to the ecosystem, the environment and human health is a very complex and lengthy process.

After the event, Zaur Imrani invited Andrea Trucchiani, a specialist of the Italian Center for Environmental Monitoring, to a scientific seminar of the institute to speak on the topic “RISICO and EFFIS Forest Fire Risk Prediction Models”.
