A scientist from Turkey, Dr. Fulya Aydin Kandemir, presented a report on “Assessment of the ecological state of the Kura and Araz rivers” (using the territories of Turkey and Azerbaijan as an example).

The executive director, Associate Professor Zaur Imrani, who chaired the meeting, noted that F. Kandemir arrived in Azerbaijan as part of a delegation of Turkish scientists within the framework of a project dedicated to the study of the Kura and Araz rivers.

A researcher at the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Department of Climate Change and Zero Waste, a specialist at the Water Policy Association and the Hydropolitics Academy, said that the expedition members also conducted research in Georgia and Armenia related to the project. The scientists agreed to make a documentary about the pollution of the named rivers in these countries, as well as Lake Goyça.

Speaking about the excessive pollution and drying up of the Araz and Kura rivers, F. Kandemir noted that they will suffer the same fate as the Aral Sea if timely measures are not taken. According to the speaker, the countries to which these rivers belong should work together and constantly and widely inform the society. Fulya Kandemir also noted that such reasons as the unsuitability of sewerage systems or their absence lead to the pollution of not only surface waters, but also groundwater.

In conclusion, F. Kandemir answered numerous questions from those present.
