A large scientific delegation headed by the Executive Director of the Institute of Geography named after Academician Hasan Aliyev, Doctor of Sciences, Associate Professor Zaur Imrani took part in the 29th (COP29) session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
One of the main goals of COP29 is to enhance public participation in climate action by promoting sustainability, minimizing environmental impacts, and promoting inclusiveness and accessibility. With this in mind, the Institute of Geography, together with the Institute of Geography and Water Security of Kazakhstan, held an event in the Blue Zone on 16 November 2024 on the theme “Day of Science, Technology and Innovation/Digitalization” under the theme “Caspian Realities: Sustainable Development”.
The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mansur Oshurbayev (Kazakhstan), Manager of the Adaptation/Revision Department of the UNFCCC (Germany) Dr. Olga Pilifosova, Chairman of the Institute of Geography and Water Security, Academician, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Akhmetkal Medeu (Kazakhstan), Executive Director of the Institute of Geography named after Academician Hasan Aliyev, Associate Professor Zaur Imrani (Azerbaijan). They brought clarity to the issues of climate change, rising air temperatures, drought, water resources, environmental problems and ways to solve them, as well as other problems occurring in our modern world.
The second part of the event was held within the framework of scientific discussions. They were attended by: Corresponding Member of ANAS, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Rauf Kardashov (Azerbaijan) "The Impact of Climate on the Caspian Sea Level", Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Said Safarov (Azerbaijan) "The Caspian Sea Level Regime", Doctor of Philosophy Janar Naurozbayeva (Kazakhstan) "Caspian Sea Ice in the Context of Climate Change", Ali Haghighi (Finland) "Assessment of the Impact of Climate Change on the Caspian Sea: a Two-Scenario Modeling Method.
An employee of the Caspian Environmental Consortium Yernar Saylibayev (Kazakhstan) "Caspian Horizons 2027 - Adaptation Review", an employee of the Institute of the Ionosphere Alena Eliseeva (Kazakhstan) "Monitoring Oil Pollution of the Caspian Sea", a teacher of the ADA University Nazrin Baghirova (Azerbaijan) and Shohida Tuliyeva, an employee of the Women in Water Diplomacy Network of Central Asia (Tajikistan) on the topics "Cooperation in Water Basins and Blue Peace in the Face of Climate Change" spoke at COP29.
Following the event, a Memorandum was signed between the Institute of Geography named after Academician Hasan Aliyev and the Institute of Geography and Water Security, and commemorative photographs were taken.
