The newspaper "Khalg" published an interview with the Director General of the Institute of Geography named after Academician H.Aliyev of MSE AR, DSc., Professor Zakir Eminov, dedicated to demographic problems.
The interview of the scientist, published under the title "Why is the population growth decreasing?" reflects his thoughts on the factors influencing the natural population growth. He cited statistical data and touched upon such factors as marriages and divorces, the maximum age for marriage, the reasons for divorces, the growth of illegal marriages and children born from them, as well as early marriages, the cause of which is lack of education.
The professor spoke about the inequality in the number of men and women leading to a decrease of marriages. Divorces seriously affect the natural population growth. The share of the urban population accounts for up to 73 percent of family breakdowns. The reason for the increase in divorces in cities is the high level of education and employment of women, their increased independence, high availability of jobs, a small number of children in families, etc. "Apparently, as a result of cultural and psychological changes, people do not treat the institution of the family the same way as before. This is manifested in a sharp decrease in the number of children in families. It is important to take serious measures, conduct information and propaganda work, help young families, provide them with financial assistance," the demographer advised.
