In a program on the Azerbaijani CBC TV channel dedicated to the decreasing water level of the Caspian Sea, entitled "The Volga River is "guilty" of the catastrophic shallowing of the Caspian Sea", an interview was presented with Professor Amir Aliyev, the head of the Department of Geomorphology of the Coast and Bottom of the Caspian Sea at the Institute of Geography named after acad H. Aliyev of the AR MSE.
The scientist links the problem of the shallowing of the sea with the decrease in the water content of the Volga River, which makes up a significant part of the Caspian. According to him, over the past 30 years, the water content of the Caspian Sea has decreased by approximately 20-30 percent, and the main role in this is played by the decrease in the water level in the River Volga. This is due to climate change, primarily with cyclones and anticyclones formed in the North Atlantic Basin and directed towards the Caspian Sea basin. Scientists believe that in the future the Caspian Sea will return to its previous level, in accordance with natural cycles.
