"The Threat of Glacier Disappearance" Oct 01, 2025 | 05:10 / IMPORTANT EVENTS

The newspaper "Caspian" published an interview with Natavan Jafarova, a leading researcher at the Institute of Geography named after H. Aliyev of the AR MSE, under the headline "The Threat of Glacier Disappearance."

It is noted that the UN has declared 2025 the year of glacier protection. This is no coincidence, as global warming is causing glaciers to melt worldwide. In her interview, the geographer covered issues such as the state of Azerbaijan's glaciers, their protection, the impact of melting on agriculture, hydropower, and the country's water supply, international and regional glacier protection initiatives, and more.

Speaking about the "Regional Dialogue on Adaptation in the South Caucasus" held in Georgia, N. Jafarova noted that in her presentation on "The Impact of Climate Change on Snow and Ice Cover in Azerbaijan: assessment, adaptation, and policy-related responses," she provided extensive information on the state of glaciers, monitoring, and adaptation measures within the framework of state policy. According to her, from 2000 to 2020, their area decreased by more than 23% compared to pre-industrial levels. Even slight warming accelerates melting.
