The international conference "A Turning Point for the Caspian Sea: From the Outcomes of COP29 and the UN Conference on Disaster Management (UNOC 2025) to Actions at COP30" was held at the Baku Congress Center.
The conference, initiated by Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva and organized by the IDEA public association and the CASPISNET scientific network, brought together experts from more than 10 countries. The goal of the conference was to exchange knowledge on sea level variability, the protection of marine biodiversity and ecological balance, and the search for common solutions.
The event discussed the growing environmental challenges facing the Caspian Sea, including a significant decline in water levels in the world's largest enclosed body of water, depletion of marine biodiversity, degradation of coastal ecosystems, and rising pollution.
Scientists from the Institute of Geography named after acad.H. Aliyev of the AR MSE gave a speech at the conference: Acting Director General, doc., PhD in geography Zaur Imrani presented a report on the impact of Caspian Sea level fluctuations on the economy and tourism; Head of the Caspian Sea Hydrometeorology Department, Doctor of Geographical Sciences Said Safarov presented a report on the impact of wind regimes on sea level change; and Senior Researcher at the Caspian Sea Level Problems Department, CASPISNET Co-Chair for Azerbaijan, PhD Elnur Safarov presented a report on plastic pollution of the Caspian Sea coast.
