February 4 marks the 76th anniversary of the birth of the distinguished geographer, renowned Caspian Sea expert and oceanologist, academician, former director of the Institute of Geography of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, State Prize laureate, and recipient of the “Shohrat” Order — Ramiz Mammadov.
Academician R. Mammadov’s research primarily focused on the most pressing problems of the Caspian Sea: its hydrology and hydrophysics, the interaction between the atmosphere and the sea, the study of turbulent exchange and turbulent diffusion processes in the marine environment, sea level changes, the impact of climate change on the Caspian Sea, the creation of physical-geographical models for the dispersion of pollutants in the marine environment, the legal status of the Caspian Sea, and Caspian Sea ecogeography in general.
Academician Ramiz Mammadov is the author of more than 320 scientific articles, 15 books, and 1 atlas. Over 20 of his works are included in the list of major scientific achievements of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
With his ri ch scientific legacy, outstanding organizational skills, dedicated work, and sincere attitude toward people, Academician Ramiz Mammadov left an indelible mark on the development of geographical science in Azerbaijan. Through the specialists he trained and the scientific school he established, his name has been permanently inscribed in the history of our science. His brilliant personality and noble character will forever remain in the memory of all who knew him.
On the occasion of the academician’s birthday, the Chairman of the Institute’s Trade Union, Kamran Ramazanli, visited his grave, paid respects, and laid a bouquet of flowers.
