A landslide has reactivated in the Badamdar highway area of Sabail Feb 18, 2026 | 03:02 / IMPORTANT EVENTS

The landslide risk has once again become critical in the Badamdar highway area of the Sabail district. Employees of the “Geomorphology and Paleogeography” laboratory of the Institute of Geography — Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor Stara Tarikhazer, and leading researcher, PhD in Geography Jeyhun Gasimov — conducted monitoring in the area.

In recent years, several landslide incidents have occurred in this location:

  • In 2014, a private residential house became unsafe and a fence collapsed;
  • In 2015, vehicle traffic was restricted;
  • In February 2016, a section of the road surface collapsed, measuring 50–60 meters in length and 7–8 meters in width;
  • In December 2016 and in May–October 2018, 11 private houses were left under threat of collapse;
  • In 2020, a mass of soil moved toward Badamdar Road, and traffic was restricted;
  • In 2021, the landslide destroyed the “Reyhan” restaurant.

According to experts, the lithological composition of the slope consists of limestone, sand, and sandy clay. In some areas, the slope gradient exceeds 60°. The main causes of the landslides include slope cutting and leakage of wastewater from outdated sewage systems of houses located on the upper part of the slope. Additionally, the intense precipitation observed in recent days — both rain and wet snow — has played a significant role in reactivating the landslide.
