Commemoration Event Held at the Institute of Geography of ANAS Dedicated to March 31 Genocide Remembrance Day Mar 31, 2026 | 12:03 / EVENTS

On March 31, a commemoration event dedicated to the March 31 – Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis was held at the Institute of Geography of ANAS. At the beginning of the event, the dear memory of the victims of the genocide was honored with a minute of silence, followed by the screening of a video dedicated to the tragedy.

Opening the event with an introductory speech, Acting Director of the Institute, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor Zaur Imrani stated that the March 31 genocide is one of the bloodiest tragedies deliberately carried out by Armenian nationalists against Azerbaijanis. He emphasized that this date has left an indelible mark on the memory of our people and that it is the duty of each of us not to forget such events and to pass them on to future generations.

Later, Chairman of the Institute’s Trade Union Organization, Kamran Ramazanli, spoke in more detail about the events of that period. He provided information about the mass massacres committed against the Azerbaijani population in Baku and other regions during March–April 1918, the destruction of settlements, and the brutal killing of thousands of innocent people. He noted that as a result of these events, hundreds of villages were razed to the ground, historical and cultural monuments were destroyed, and the civilian population suffered heavy losses.

Kamran Ramazanli stressed that the genocide was not limited to physical destruction but was also part of a deliberate policy aimed at erasing the material and cultural heritage of our people. It was noted that our nation will never forget this tragedy, no matter how many centuries pass, and that this painful page of our history will always be remembered and passed on to future generations. He also highlighted that the decree “On the Genocide of Azerbaijanis,” signed by Heydar Aliyev on March 26, 1998, is of great importance in providing the first legal and political assessment of these events and plays a significant role in conveying historical truths to the international community.

At the end of the event, participants once again paid tribute to the memory of the victims of the March 31 genocide.
