December 22, a summary report on “Scientific and scientific-organizational activities of the Institute of Geography for 2016” was presented at a joint meeting of the Department of Earth Sciences and the Institute of Geography of ANAS.

Academician-secretary of the department, academician Fakhraddin Gadirov, who chaired the meeting, reported on issues on the agenda. Then he gave the word to the director ofthe Institute of Geography, academician Ramiz Mammadov, for the summary report.

R.Mammadov enumerated areas of researches and trends, to which employees ofthe Institute devoted their scientificwork in 2016. These were geo-economic problems of the regons of Azerbaijan, their environmental and geographic condition; the dynamic changes taking place in modern ecosystems of Azerbaijan;water reserves and human activities; assessment of the possible impact of climate change on economic systems and the Azerbaijan nature; a comprehensive study of hydrophysical fields in the water area of the Azerbaijan section of the Caspian Sea and other issues. The academician noted the problems, which were investigated: regularities of development of Azerbaijan nature; natural resources and their ecogeographic features; economic and geographic problems of the territorial organization of production, social infrastructure and population, and a comprehensive study of the Caspian Sea ecosystem. 7 of 15 realized themes, covering these issues, are fundamental, 8 are of practical importance.

In 2016, according to research plan of the Institute, 11 themes, 14 works and 19 stages from 15 themes, 18 works and 19 stages were completed at the end of this year.

It was pointed out that 10 scientific results have been received of the completed research projects. In view of the major achievements, the head of the Institute stressed that a method of simulation and visualization of car movement on all the way was developed, which is based on the solution of differential equations of motion.This method can be used to organize the basics of solar car navigation systems and their optimal control.

Also, based on new factual materials, relief, geological structure, climate, water reserves, soil and vegetation cover, landscape, geographical and physical zoning were anlized for the whole territory of the country.

They were identified changes in the socio-economic development of our country and its regions in the years of independence. The research results have been awarded state awards of the Azerbaijan Republic.

Academician noted that the Institute of Geography has carried out research work under 4 grant projects, and 2 projects have won the competition at the end of this year. This year, employees of the institute have published or submitted for publication about 200 scientific papers.

7 from 45 articles published abroad were placed in journals with impact factor.

Among the published 1 book, 6 monographs, 1 popular scientific book, 5 textbooks and teaching aids, 2 journals. 138 articles have already been published.

“Climatic map of the world” and “Mudflows map of Azerbaijan” were published; 1st volume of two-volume “Geography of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic” was submittid for publication.   

Then, on this issue spoke the ANAS Vice-President, Director of the Oil and Gas Institute, Academician Ibrahim Guliyev, Director of the Republican Seismological Survey Center, correspondent member of ANAS Gurban Yetirmishli, head of the department Tectonophysics and Geomechanics in the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS, Academician Hatam Guliyev, scientists of the Institute of Geography: head of the department, corresponding member of ANAS Rauf Gardashov and PhD in agriculture Anvar Aliyev.
