The meeting of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Geography named after acad. H. Aliyev of ANAS under the chairmanship of academician Ramiz Mammadov, held on February 21 , was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the outstanding scientist-geographer, full member of ANAS, acad. Budag Budagov.

R.Mammadov, noting the international renown of the prominent scientist Budag Budagov, called him an enciclopedia of Azerbaijani science and noted that a number of scientific innovations and successes are directly related to his name.

Talking about the great contribution of Budag Budagov to science, the academician recalled the great scientific school that he left behind himself, about the evaluation of his work on the part of the leader Heydar Aliyev of his “Dictionnary of Toponyms of Azerbaijani Origin in Armenia” and the words of the leader: “So they serve the Motherland”.

Deputy director for science, associate professor Maharram Hasanov made an extensive report on the life and work of the scientist. According to him, the development of some geographical sciences is assiciated with his name. He was the founder of geomorphology and the science of landscapes. His pupils-geographers are known not only in our country, but also in the former USSR.  Hie research in the field of mudflows, landslides, glaciers gave a great impetus to the development of geomorphology. M.Hasanov noted that “with the name of B.Budagov is associated the development of toponymy as a science. He is the organizer of 2 conferences dedicated to the Azerbaijani toponymy. He is the author of more than 1000 works, 30 monographs, about 200 articles have been written about him.

Further chairman of the TU, PhD Abil Akhverdiyev, D.Sc. Rena Gashgay, Magomed Abdiyev, PhD M.Ismayulov, Anvar Aliyev, Zahid Ahmedov and others shared their memories of the academician.

By the decision of the Scientific Council, the Department of Landscape Science of the IG was named after B.Budagov.
